Halloween might be long gone and carnival still seems like a long way away. Yet, those with a particular penchant for fancy dress will have an excuse to don their favourite “outfits” this weekend.
Today and tomorrow marks the Malta Comic Con’s third edition and, on this occasion, fans are once again being encouraged to create costumes of their favourite heroes and attend the convention costume-clad.
Organised by Wicked Comics, this international event will be held at St James Cavalier, Centre for Creativity, Valletta between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The convention, “an event for all those who have the comic culture at heart”, will feature material intended both for younger and more mature audiences.
Moreover, there will be free movies and animations continuously in the cinema, artwork and collectibles exhibitions, discussion panels and workshops by a number of guests/participants.
Gamers will also have the opportunity of playing for fun on a variety of leading consoles or of entering specific tournaments. A number of exhibition and introductory table-top and creative role playing games are also being held. A cosplay competition on each of the convention days will be held and commercial stands will complement individual events.
This year’s line-up again includes a pretty impressive list of foreign guests: UK-based writer and illustrator Tim Perkins, who will be launching his book Worlds End; the comic book artist who is based in Glasgow, Gary Erskine; Vampire Academy illustrator Emma Vieceli; leading Manga creator, lecturer and professional cosplayer Sonia Leong; British V for Vendetta illustrator, David Lloyd; Time Bomb Comics publisher Steve Tanner will be launching Dick Turpin; Classical Comics’ Macbeth illustrator, Jon Haward; Fish + Chocolate comic maker, Kate Brown; the president of Eva Ink Publishing, Renee Witterstaetter; artist/writer/creator, Michael Golden; newspaper and magazine illustrator Lucio Parillo; Italian artist and illustrator Marco Santucci; Italian digital illustrator and painter Leonardo Meschini; cartoonist and publisher Sean Azzopardi; The Tunnel graphic novel illustrator Christopher Malipitan and influential comic art lecturer Thomas Gosselin.
Joining the professionals will be some of Malta’s top creators, a few of who have already published their own work such as The Golden Lizard, The Tsar, Ħal Mudlam, Arcana Crusade and For Gallantry.
More locally-produced comics will be launched this year including the second issue of Ħal Mudlam, Pilot, Apocalypse Rocked and the latest instalments of the running series Kranium and Il-Gawgaw u l-Imlejka.
