Madonna men's soccer falls in first round of NAIA Tournament | MLive.com

Madonna fell 4-1 to Rio Grande University (OH) in Rio Grande in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament on Saturday.

Freshmen midfielder Nick Atwood scored the lone goal for the Crusaders in the 81st minute after the Red Storm scored the first four goals of the match.

Junior forward Dane Laird (Farmington Hills) led Atwood (Livonia) into the box for Atwood’s only goal of the season.

Second team all-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference selection Adrian Motta made 10 saves for the Crusaders.

Rio Grande is the fifth seed in the national tournament and outshot Madonna 28-6 in the match. Madonna only put two of their six shots on goal throughout the match.

Madonna ends the season with a 7-9-5 record while Rio Grande improves to 18-2. Rio Grande finished in second place in the Mid-South Conference with a 6-1 record.

The Red Storm will now face Belhaven (MS) in the second round of the national tournament.
