Two Tri-State high school football teams will play for state championship titles Friday night, and both big games will be broadcast locally.
Here in Indiana, the Mater Dei Wildcats will charge into Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis at 6 p.m. to face Fort Wayne Bishop Luers for the Class 2A trophy. Between TV and radio stations in Southwestern Indiana, you'll have no trouble keeping up with the game. If you're so inclined, you can even watch online at IHSAA.org.
Locally, the game will be televised on the NEWS 25 Sports Channel (ch. 25.2). Area radio stations carrying the game include WBNL-1540 in Boonville; WGBF-1280 here in Evansville; WBDC-100.9 in Huntingburg; WITZ-104.7 and WQKZ-98.5 in Jasper; WRZR-94.5 in Loogootee; WRCY-1590 in Mt. Vernon; WAXL-103.3 in Santa Claus; and WAMW-107.9 in Washington.
Meanwhile, in Illinois, the Mount Carmel Golden Aces are traveling to Memorial Stadium in Champaign to face Aurora Christian in Class 3A action. That game will air at 4 p.m. Friday on WAZE-CW19 and WUSI-PBS ch. 16.1. As of my deadline, radio coverage information was not available; however, by game time, I'll make every effort to post that on my website (jakesdtvblog.blogspot.com).
In other news this week:
With just a few days before Nexstar Broadcasting completes the consolidation of Local 7 WTVW and WEHT-NEWS 25 in Henderson, there's still much we don't know about what we'll see from the two stations' news departments.
The shared services agreement between new WTVW owner Mission Broadcasting and new WEHT owner (former WTVW owner) Nexstar means we'll likely see fewer newscasts on Local 7, and it's not immediately clear who will anchor those that remain on the schedule.
The future of the NEWS 25 Sports Channel also is in doubt.
What is clear is that a sizable number of good people, many of whom have dedicated many years of their lives to these two stations, have been laid off in the process of consolidation. My hope is that all of them know what their contributions have meant to those of us who may not know their names, but appreciate their hard work.
For this upcoming holiday season, the Townsquare Media radio stations in Evansville (WKDQ, WJLT, WDKS, WGBF-FM and WGBF-AM) will once again team up with Henderson Chevrolet-Buick-GMC and the 911 Gives Hope charity to present the third annual "911 Gives Hope for the Holidays." Last year the stations successfully filled a 53-foot trailer with toys that were distributed to the children's wards at local hospitals.
This year all five FM radio stations will again partner together for a mass broadcast Radiothon to urge the public to donate toys, clothing, gift certificates and more to children's wards at Deaconess Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Evansville Psychiatric Children's Center and the Ronald McDonald House.
The Radiothon will begin 5 a.m. Dec. 2 and will run through 6 p.m. Dec. 4. The radio stations will broadcast live from the Walmart on Burkhardt Road the entire weekend with additional broadcasts live from Henderson Chevrolet-Buick-GMC in Henderson, Ky. Local fire departments, police departments, sheriff's departments and AMR will participate in an effort to fill another 53-foot trailer.
The toys that are collected will be sorted and delivered to the local hospitals just in time for Christmas.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Take time today and count your blessings with those you love ... and don't overdo it on the turkey and trimmings.
