Five Bourbon County 4-H members recently competed in the 38th Annual North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky.

Team members were Cole George, Drew George, Chase Gleason and Reed Gleason, all members of the Uniontown 4-H Club, and Katelyn Vincent of the Hiattville 4-H Club.

The livestock judging and skillathon teams qualified to represent Kansas by receiving first place in both contests at the Third Annual Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes held in August on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan.

In the Livestock Skillathon, 4-Hers rotated individually through stations that addressed areas of animal science. Those included breed identification, equipment identification, retail meat identification, quality assurance, a written exam, wool judging and hay judging.

There was also a team component where members worked together on selecting Boer does based on a given situation, quality assurance and a livestock feeding scenario.

In the evaluation division, Chase Gleason placed second followed by Cole George placing fourth. Drew George completed the team of three. As a team, the squad was awarded first place in the evaluation division. They finished sixth overall in the Skillathon contest, competing against 17 other states.

The livestock judging contest consisted of 11 judging classes, four sets of reasons and two sets of questions; 28 states competed in the event. Reed Gleason placed seventh in the individual reasons division. Other members of the livestock team were Chase Gleason, Cole George and Vincent.

Along with the contests, members traveled to Lexington for a tour of the Rood and Riddle Equine Center and Keeneland Racetrack. On the way home, the youth took the opportunity to visit the Gateway Arch in St Louis, Mo.

This awards trip was made possible with the support of the Bourbon County Sale Committee, Southwind Extension District and the Kansas Livestock Association. Trip chaperones were Darrel George, parent, and Extension Agent Delta George.
