Cowboys 27, Redskins 24 - There’s still some steam left in the Dallas-Washington rivalry, enough to create an overtime nail-biter even when one team is on a roll and the other is struggling. Dan Bailey’s 39-yard field goal 9:21 into the extra period Sunday decided the Cowboys’ 27-24 victory, their third straight win and the Redskins’ sixth consecutive defeat. Bailey’s winning kick was set up by Tony Romo’s 26-yard completion to Dez Bryant on third-and-15 after Washington’s Graham Gano was barely wide right on a 52-yard field-goal attempt on the opening possession of overtime. After rolling to double-digit wins that put the Cowboys on the heels of the NFC East-leading New York Giants, Romo and the Cowboys (6-4) had to rally in the second half against a team that has spent more than a month in the doldrums. His two fourth-quarter touchdown passes were vintage Romo, scrambling to buy time to toss a 7-yard game-tying score to Laurent Robinson before rolling left to spot a wide-open Jason Wittenfor a 59-yard go-ahead TD with 8:48 to play. Bailey, Romo Lead Cowboys Past Redskins In OT - Tony Romo threw two fourth quarter touchdowns and Dan Bailey nailed a 39-yard field goal in overtime to give the Dallas Cowboys a 27-24 victory over the Washington Redskins. Romo completed 23-of-37 passes for 292 yards and three scores for Dallas (6-4), which won its third straight game. DeMarco Murray carried the ball 25 times for 73 yards and Jason Witten paced the Cowboys with 85 receiving yards and a score. Rex Grossman threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-tying four-yard TD in the final minute of regulation on 25-of-38 passing for Washington (3-7). READ MORE
Dan "Split'Em" Bailey Bails Out Cowboys, Dallas Defeats Redskins In OT 27-24 - In a game where special teams threatened to derail all of the progress this team has made over the last two weeks, kicker Dan Bailey booted the Cowboys to a 27-24 overtime win over the Washington Redskins. Luckily, Mike Shanahan attempted to ice Bailey and saved the Cowboys goose (turkey?) by calling a timeout as the play clock was winding down. Holder Tony Romo was attempting to call the timeout himself, but Dallas didn't have any and would have incurred a delay of game penalty if he wasn't saved. Bailey came on and snuck the kick inside the right goal post, his 25th in a row, providing Cowboys fans everywhere some relief. READ MORE
Open Game Day Thread: Bye Week Edition - The early games kickoff today with your Houston Texans holding the #1 seed in the AFC. I never get tired of writing that (though, admittedly, they would fall to #2 should the Ravens beat the Bengals). Even though the Texans are off this week, I assume that you will be watching one or more of the other games. Consider this your open thread for commenting on those games. READ MORE
Texans balancing injuries with success - Even now, in the best of times, the Houston Texans can't escape their star-crossed history. The Texans (7-3) are off to the fastest start in franchise history and enter their bye week on a four-game winning streak. They've taken control of the AFC South and share the top record in the conference with Pittsburgh, whom they defeated on Oct. 2. And somehow they've done it as their best players continue to go down with major injuries. The latest is quarterback Matt Schaub, who may be lost for the season after injuring a Lisfranc joint in his right foot during Sunday's 37-9 win over Tampa Bay. Schaub has started all but 10 games since the start of the 2007 season, but Matt Leinart will replace him for the Texans' next game, in Jacksonville on Nov. 27. READ MORE
Dallas Stars Coach Glen Gulutzan: "We're going to shut our mouths and we're going to play." - Over the past eight days, the Dallas Stars have lost five straight games that included 194:11 of ice time without a goal spanning four games. We've seen two games where the Stars were tied with their opponent heading into the third period only to fall apart in the final frame. We've also seen a Dallas Stars team that seemed to have lost all sense of what had made them a successful team to start the season, including a 6-0 debacle of a loss against Florida on home ice. This losing streak has called into question many aspects of this team especially considering how coach Glen Gulutzan refused to stray from his plan and wanted his team to just fight through the adversity. We've seen how a singular injury -- the loss of Alex Goligoski to a broken thumb -- has an incredible effect on the rest of the team. We've also seen how the regression of Mike Ribeiro and Brenden Morrow as serious offensive threats has created a void in scoring ability outside of the top line. READ MORE
Tomas Vincour, Philip Larsen to play Monday - Right wing Tomas Vincour and defenseman Philip Larsen will be in the lineup Monday night when the Dallas Stars take on the Edmonton Oilers at American Airlines Center. The Stars have lost five straight games and have scored just four goals during those five games. Vincour, who has 10 goals in 15 games for the Texas Stars, was called up this morning from the Texas Stars. Larsen, who had 10 points in 10 games with Texas, was called up last weekend, but has been a healthy scratch the last four games. READ MORE
Dallas recalls Tomas Vincour from Texas Stars - The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has recalled right wing Tomas Vincour (Vin-sooer) from the Texas Stars, Dallas’ primary affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). He will join the Stars for Monday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers. Vincour, 20, leads all Texas Stars in goal scoring with 10 goals in 15 games. He made his NHL debut last season with Dallas, registering one goal and one assist in 24 games with the NHL club. The Brno, Czech Republic native was selected by Dallas in the fifth round (129th overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. READ MORE
New MLB labor agreement will include testing for HGH - Unlike the contentious labor negotiations that have taken place in the NFL and NBA this year, Major League Baseball was expected to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement this winter without much pain. That was largely because the biggest issue facing MLB's new agreement was the implementation of a slotting system in the MLB draft, which didn't affect big-league players and wasn't likely to be a major sticking point for the players union. But according to a New York Times report by Michael S. Schmidt, the new bargaining agreement will also include provisions for human growth hormone testing in Major League players for the first time in the league's history. Schmidt cited two anonymous sources who confirmed the planned addition of HGH testing to baseball. According to the sources, testing would begin when players report to spring training in February, and the penalty for a first-time offender will be a 50-game suspension, on par with baseball's penalty for steroid users. The Bud Selig hate. It burns. - I've not seen any writing on the Astros AL move that really captures what I think (read FEEL) about things. So here's an attempt. First of all, not that it matters one lick, but I strongly suggest as a part of your Astros healing process, you shout into the abyss by sending Bud Selig a piece of your mind:
His 3:00 minute video press conference after the move was announced was enraging. He did not come close to even acknowledging how sickening the process was to Houston fans. Not one lick of apology. NOTHING. "The greatest thing this sport has going for it is its history and tradition." ENRAGING. No apology. No even basic recognition of how bad Astros fans got hosed in this. He goes on and on about how Drayton McLane left a great legacy and left the team better than he found it. Yeah, we got a stadium, but that was partly Bud Adams' doing. McLane sold a weak team and made it weaker by switching it to the AL. Just an infuriating video. READ MORE
Castro, Astros prospects part of championship team in Arizona Fall League - Arizona Fall League MVP Nolan Arenado (Rockies) blasted a third-inning solo home run, while David Nick (Diamondbacks) recorded a clutch bases-loaded triple, to lead the Salt River Rafters to a league championship title Saturday afternoon with a 9-3 victory over the Surprise Saguaros at Scottsdale Stadium. The Rafters capitalized on a five-run seventh. Astros catcher Jason Castro connected for a one-out double in the fourth -- his lone hit of the game -- off Surprise starter Alex Sanabia. READ MORE
Dazzling Dozen: A big Hamilton homer - We have now reached the top 5 in our Dazzling Dozen series. That means one more week's worth of memories from this 2011 season. The No. 5 moment was an emotional one for Josh Hamilton, the team and the Rangers' fan base July 9. No one in the Rangers community will forget about July 7. That was the night that Shannon Stone, a 39-year-old Brownwood firefighter passed away from injuries sustained after falling about 20 feet over a railing in left field. Cooper, his six-year-old son, watched as his father attempted to catch a foul ball flipped to him by Hamilton. READ MORE
Rangers place one player on AFL all-prospects team - Third baseman Mike Olt was the Texas Rangers' lone representative on the Arizona Fall League all-prospects team. Olt and Colorado's Nolan Arenado were named the top third basemen in a vote by league managers and coaches. Olt led the AFL in homers (13), RBIs (43) and slugging percentage (.764) in 106 at-bats. Olt, who has not played above the low-Class-A level, finished one homer shy of Brandon Wood's AFL record. Wood, a top prospect at one point, has failed in trails with Pittsburgh and the Los Angeles Angels. READ MORE
Unlike NFL lockout, NBA's truly jeopardizes season - Minnesota Timberwolves forward Anthony Tolliver was watching back in March, when pro football players such as Tom Brady and Drew Brees announced they were disbanding their union and suing the NFL under antitrust law. "We'll see how the next steps go," Tolliver said at the time. "Hopefully we'll learn from them." Well, now it's time to find out what Tolliver and his peers picked up. He's one of a handful of basketball players, including All-Stars Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, who filed class-action antitrust complaints against the NBA in federal court during the past week. That could lead to a dragged-out legal process or -- as happened with the NFL's labor dispute -- wind up bringing the sides back to the negotiating table. "We've seen every twist and turn, and I imagine we'll see many more. Hopefully a settlement can be reached, relatively quickly, and the (NBA) season can be saved," said Jeffrey Kessler, outside counsel for both the NFL and NBA players' associations. "That would be the best result for everyone, to have a litigation settlement now." The NBA's lockout came swiftly on the heels of the NFL's, already has lasted longer, and there's one significant difference: Football's labor dispute resulted in the loss of only a single exhibition game, while the NBA is on its way down the path toward a shortened regular season -- if one is played at all. Project Spurs: Tiago Splitter records double-double in Valencia debut - After a whirlwind week for San Antonio Spurs' Tiago Splitter, the Brazilian big man made his debut for Valencia Basket against UCAM Murcia in grand fashion. Splitter, who joined Valencia for the duration of the NBA lockout, finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, shot 4-9 from the field, 4-6 from the free-throw line in 28 minutes in a narrow 86-83 overtime win against Murcia. Despite Splitter's presence, Murcia proved to be a tough team for Valencia. READ MORE
Former Spur Charles Smith in nasty spat with retired players’ union - Spurs Nation will remember Charles Smith as one of the most maddening talents to ever play for the team. Back in the days before Tim Duncan filled the paint for the Spurs, Smith was counted to provide an inside threat with David Robinson. He had averaged at least 20 points in two different seasons earlier in his career. More of the same when he arrived in San Antonio from New York in a trade involving J.R. Reid. Instead, Smith became one of the biggest bust in franchise history, averaging 7.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 51 career games (and 37 starts) over two seasons with the Spurs. He was let go on Jan. 6, 1998 after not playing since the end of the 1996-97 season. He never played in the NBA again. READ MORE
Show and Tell! I Got a New Shoe! - A good friend of mine is an avid (understatement) collector of sports memorabilia, and he is running out of room for all the signed doodads he collects. So I wound up the beneficiary of his most recent housecleaning when he sent me this signed, game-worn shoe from Shawn Marion. Pretty sure it's from Phoenix. Don't worry, he kept the other one for himself. I'm pretty pumped about it, and I can't wait to finally live in my own place someday where I can have a little shrine full of my Mavs 'things'. These include my finals media pass, a Larry O'Brien pin (media swag), my Finals DVD, and now this spectacular shoe. READ MORE
Jason Kidd puts $1.6 million Dallas condo up for sale - With a roster full of aging stars, there was thought that the Mavericks might actually benefit from a prolonged lockout, as a shortened season could keep players like Jason Kidd fresh for one more run at a championship. But now with the NBA facing a "nuclear winter," there's a chance that Kidd may never put on a Mavericks jersey again. The Mavs' point guard, who will turn 39 in March, recently put his $1.6 million Dallas condo on the market, according to TMZ. The condo is just a few blocks from the American Airlines Center.
