The holiday season got under way Saturday at Sunset Hill Farm County Park with the 13th annual Winter Lights Night display accompanied by fireworks in the early evening darkness.
Judging by the size of the crowd it was apparent people are ready for the season to begin.
County Parks official Matt Pera said at least 5,000 vehicles are expected and noted attendance has steadily increased.
Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby Christmas songs blared over the loudspeakers as visitors strolled the grounds looking at the lights and living Christmas tree displays while searching for family friendly activity stations.
his way through the crowds, shaking hands like a seasoned politician. The line of children to see Santa was nearly 60 minutes long by 4 p.m.
For the child (or parent) too antsy to wait, a sign directed them to where they could write a letter and mail it to Santa, postage free.
Loraine Culkin has been bringing her children, Carly, 12, and Kacey, 7, for the past 10 years. “It’s a family tradition. Each year it gets better and better.”
Vicki Johnson accompanied her grandchildren, Jasmine and Justine King. This was her first time attending the festival.
“I can’t wait until it gets dark,” Johnson said. “I love things like this around Valparaiso, it’s such a great town.”
George and Linda Novotny, new to the area, were looking for family-oriented events to attend. “Very nice. Only thing missing is the snow,” George said.
Beginning Thanksgiving Day from 5 to 9 p.m. and continuing from 5 to 9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through New Year’s Day the light display will be open for a free drive through.
