Five top reasons for buying a new car

Should you buy a new or used car?

To make the case for buying a new car, we asked Sandy Liguori of the Toronto Automobile Dealers’ Association ( www.tada.ca ) for their top reasons why consumers should choose new over used.

Previously, we asked the Used Car Dealers’ Association of Ontario ( www.ucda.org ) for their top five reasons to buy a used car. This article can be viewed online.

Here are the TADA’s top five reasons to buy a new car:

Auto manufacturers today offer extremely competitive finance and lease rates, including zero per cent financing, cash delivery credits and rebates. Plus, financing terms on new cars are generally more attractive than on used cars.

New cars come equipped with the most advanced electronics systems and safety features (such as side air bags, ABS brakes, and durable body construction), and are more fuel efficient than older models.

A standard new car warranty is three years and at least 60,000 km (whichever comes first). Some manufacturers offer four- and five-year warranties of 100,000 km or more. A longer warranty period has tremendous value for consumers who want reliability and peace of mind driving.

Many consumers enjoy the experience of buying the newest models available (that includes hybrids and electric vehicles). They can customize the car’s interior and exterior to suit personal preferences, in order to optimize their driving experience. With these buyers, there is a strong sense of pride of ownership.

The first three years of a new car require lower maintenance costs, which is an important selling feature. Plus, the lifespan of vehicles has grown in recent years. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reports a 20 per cent increase over the past five years in the number of vehicles on the road that are 16 years or older.

A new car is free of “ghosts” from previous owners, such as lingering cigarette smoke, mysterious odours, stains, dents and dings, etc. But, obviously, this luxury comes at a cost when opting for a new car over used.
