Former Rice quarterback Chase Clement is thrilled he will get the chance to work out for the Houston Texans on Monday.
The Texans may be looking for depth at quarterback while they wait to see if Matt Schaub can bounce back from a severe foot injury and play again this season.
"I can't say how excited I am and how blessed I am to have the opportunity," Clement said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.
"Certainly I've been waiting to get an opportunity to get into a system for a long time, and of course I've got to go out there and prove I am able to make the team, but this is certainly the first step to just getting that opportunity."
Clement, who went undrafted in 2009, signed with Hamilton of the Canadian Football League, but chose not to pursue his career there.
Since then Clement has played the past two seasons with Las Vegas of the United Football League where he led the Locomotives to the championship in 2010 and was named the Most Valuable Player of the title game.
In 2011 Clement led Las Vegas back to the UFL championship game where the Locomotives lost to Virginia.
Clement understands what he needs to show Texans coaches and management on Monday.
"For me the biggest thing I need to show is I need to show accuracy," Clement said. "Being a smaller quarterback and that already being against me, I need to show the thing that any quarterback no matter who they are needs to show."
Clement owns all of the major passing records at Rice where he combined with receiver Jarett Dillard to hold the Football Bowl Subdivision record for career touchdowns between a quarterback and receiver (51).
