Falls online reservation firm gets national award

Meridian Reservation Systems' clients include Toronto Tourism, Ottawa Tourism By BRETT CLARKSON Niagara Falls Review Posted 2 hours ago

Elaine Bald and John Pinter have no reservations about celebrating the fact their Niagara Falls-based company has won a prestigious national tourism industry award.

"This is the highest-ranking tourism award in Canada the competition is from right across Canada," Bald said. "We were so honoured to have been nominated."

Bald is the director of business development and Pinter is the president and founder of Meridian Reservation Systems, a creator of online-reservation software headquartered on Robinson St. in Niagara Falls.

Since Pinter, a former Lundy's Lane hotelier, founded the company in 1999, Meridian has grown to acquire over 20 clients from across North America.

On Thursday, the company was awarded the Hilton Worldwide Small or Medium-sized Business of the Year award at the Tourism Industry Association of Canada's (TIAC) annual Canadian Tourism Awards.

The award recognizes a tourism business with fewer than 20 employees that is an "example of all-round business excellence in the tourism industry," according to the association. It was given out at TIAC's annual awards gala at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa.

The other nominees were Experience PEI and Tours Voir Quebec, with an honourable mention to Croisieres Sheddiac Bay Cruises in New Brunswick.

Pinter and Bald explained that Meridian specializes in working with what the industry calls destination management organizations, or DMOs, which are the official tourism sites of cities like Toronto, Ottawa, London, and Calgary.

They said that when a traveller goes to Tourism Toronto's web site, or Ottawa Tourism's site, they're using Meridian's software when they go to book a hotel room online.

"The minute that you go to make a hotel reservation or buy a ticket to an attraction or look at events, that's all powered by us," Pinter said.

Pinter and Bald also wanted to give credit to Baijumon George, Meridian's director of technical development.

Looking ahead to the future, Pinter and Bald said they'll work on developing new products while enhancing their core online-reservation software.
