This weekend is a good news/bad news one for programming. Consider:
1. Could Game 7 of the World Series be as memorable as Game 6 last night?
We’ll find out tonight. The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers, setting up the deciding game tonight on Fox. Coverage starts at 7:30.
A Game 7 is bad news for NBC, which will be overshadowed as “Chuck” returns at 8 to start its final season.
The premiere of “Grimm” follows at 9. ”Grimm” tries to inject new life in the police procedural with fantasy. A police detective learns he is a descendant of the Brothers Grimm, which explains why so many wicked characters are headed his way. On the plus side, the makeup is impressive, and Kate Burton puts in a creepy guest appearance. On the down side, the detective is a pretty blah fellow to have descended from the Grimm family. Don’t be fooled. The grim, violent situations make this one unsuitable for young children.
2. “The Simpsons” rolls out the 22nd installment of “Treehouse of Horror” at 8 p.m. Sunday on Fox. The animated comedy spoofs “127 Hours,” “Spider-Man,” “Dexter” and “Avatar.” The “Dexter” send-up is especially audacious as “The Simpsons” turns again to religious issues.
The bad news: “The Simpsons” looks like a feast next to the premiere of “Allen Gregory” at 8:30 on Fox. Jonah Hill gives voice to a pretentious 7-year-old in this flimsy animated comedy. Catch him quick, because he won’t be around for long. This is one of fall’s weaker new entries.
3. John Walsh is back hunting fugitives in a two-hour “America’s Most Wanted” special at 8 p.m. Saturday on Fox. If you miss the series, good news: Walsh says the series should start in December on Lifetime.
4. The CBS lineup on Sunday sounds enticing. Morley Safer interviews relatives of financier Bernard Madoff on “60 Minutes.” Previews suggest that “The Good Wife” will deliver another first-rate episode. The bad news: A football double-header is likely to delay the lineup. Plan accordingly.
5. ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” scored impressive ratings against strong competition when it debuted last week. Will viewers return at 8 p.m. Sunday? ABC will find out the news, good or bad, on Monday.
6. Sunday’s lineup is packed with strong dramas. I can tell you “The Walking Dead,” at 9 on AMC, delivers another harrowing hour. The episode mixes disturbing action scenes with wrenching moments of family drama. The hour concludes with a shocker that will leave fans stunned. I think the news in this situation is only good.
