Our View: Madonna is clear choice for Griswold

In the three-way contest for first selectman in Griswold, we endorse the candidacy of Republican Theresa Madonna.

In no other race this year is the choice as clear as it is in this contest. Voters have an opportunity to elect to move forward, maintain the status quo or revert to the partisan politics of the past.

Madonna represents the future. She has the experience to lead, the patience and demeanor needed to resolve problems, and the passion and desire to serve. She has strong leadership skills, demonstrated by her years of service as a member of the Board of Education, and a willingness to tackle the tough issues, as demonstrated by her work on the Board of Selectmen.

Madonna is not afraid to take chances, and is unwilling to simply accept the status quo because that’s the way it’s always been done. Her efforts to restore unity and civility to the Republican Town Committee, refocusing the committee’s objectives toward serving the community’s interest rather than party politics, speaks volumes about her commitment to service.

Incumbent Democrat Phil Anthony is an adequate caretaker and represents the status quo. He’s responsive when he’s needed, but usually after the fact and often slow to act. He’s content with accepting whatever opportunities arise. He’s no visionary, nor has he demonstrated any sincere interest in investing the extra time and energy needed to meet challenges head-on.

Petitioning candidate Peter Zvingilas is a throwback to partisan politics. He’s based his entire campaign on the claim that Anthony is a “part-time” first selectman — a claim that has absolutely no merit, and is indicative of the personal and vindictive nature of a campaign reminiscent of the politics of the past.

Anthony, meanwhile, does himself no favors by his frequent absences from Town Hall and his stubborn refusal to address an issue that has dogged him since he was elected four years ago.

Griswold residents deserve better than the status quo or a return to petty politics.

Theresa Madonna offers a brighter future, and an opportunity to move forward.
