It turns out that smartphones are good for a lot more than just a rousing game of Angry Birds or Words with Friends. In fact, there’s a new and potentially lifesaving medical invention out that combines a heart monitoring device with smartphone technology.
Developed together with Embedded Systems and Telecommunications Circuits labs at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), the advanced tool is extremely lightweight and has four non-invasive electrodes that attach to your skin. Since the electrodes are linked to a radio module and computer chip by a belt the user wears, crucial heart data is able to be transmitted to the patient’s doctor 24/7 via picture attachment received by text or email.
This means that patients can have their hearts monitored from anywhere at anytime and much easier than ever before. If you’ve ever known anyone with heart issues, it’s extremely frustrating when doctors can’t find the answers you’re looking for. Technology like this will allow for more in-depth analysis and hopefully, higher treatment success rates.
It’s exciting to see medical advancements like this coming from such an unlikely source. The same device that I use every day to text my friends on and play with my silly virtual aquarium could possibly save someone’s life. I heart this!
