Dan Kolko: Expect D. Reed to get kickoff return duties Monday night

In his first game back from a shoulder injury, wide receiver David Reed was not given the Ravens' kickoff return duties last week against the Texans.

Expect that to change this week.

A team source said that Reed will return kicks when the Ravens take on the Jaguars Monday night. Reed will replace cornerback Bryan McCann, who filled in as Baltimore's kickoff returner against Houston.

In the Texans game, McCann showed well, averaging 26.5 yards on two kickoff returns and showing his fearlessness by sprinting full speed into oncoming Texans cover guys.

But Reed led the league in kickoff return average last season, recording 29.3 yards per return, and he added a 77-yard kickoff return in the Ravens' Week 2 loss to the Titans this year.

The Ravens will apparently not hold Reed's shoulder injury against him, and will give him the chance to take the return job back this Monday night.

For what it's worth, special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg declared the kickoff return battle an open competition yesterday.

"We brought Bryan McCann in here, and one of the reasons we brought him in here is because he had experience and success returning kicks and punts," Rosburg said. "So far, we have seen that there is a reason he has had success. He runs hard, he has good vision, and we also have on our team currently, as you know, others that do the same - punts and kick returns.

"We have had competition every day in practice. It's healthy, it's good. David Reed feels it's healthy and good. 'Webby' (Lardarius Webb) feels it is healthy and good. The more things you can do to help your team, the better your team is going to be."
