NIAGARA FALLS, Ont.—A 19- year-old Scarborough, Ont., woman who authorities say was trying to commit suicide by way of the Horseshoe Falls was rescued Wednesday afternoon, Niagara Parks Police reported.
The woman, whose name was withheld, was being treated for back injuries after a nearly 20-foot fall into the Niagara River at the Canadian Niagara Power Plant, 7005 Niagara River Parkway.
Authorities responded to a 4:25 p. m. call for a woman who had fallen into the river and found her sitting in just over 2 feet of water near the power plant’s tailrace, about a fifth of a mile upriver from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls.
She was found resting near a large stone retaining wall, police said.
Firefighters descended to water level and pulled her to safety.
A mental health evaluation was to be performed.
