SIU investigating man's fall from roof

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been called in for an incident on McLeod Rd., where a man was seriously injured after police found him on the roof of a building.

Jason Gorman, 29, has had two surgeries and is recovering at the Hamilton General Hospital after suffering two broken arms and a shattered vertebrae in his back, a family member told The Niagara Falls Review.

"My brother could have been killed and I want people to know what happened. He's in pretty bad shape," said Wendy Gorman, who learned her brother was in hospital after getting a call at 3 a.m., from his girlfriend.

Gorman said her brother initially had no feeling from the waist down and they were concerned he might be paralyzed. Some feeling has since returned to one leg.

The incident took place Sept. 19, but neither the SIU or the Niagara Regional Police Service put out any type of a media release on this case following the incident.

The Review was made aware of the case last week after receiving an e-mail from Wendy Gorman, the victim's sister, who lives about eight hours away in Cobalt, a community in northern Ontario.

Monday, after being contacted by The Review, the SIU and the NRP confirmed an investigation is under way regarding this matter.

Jasbir Brar, spokeswoman for SIU Communications, said they only have some preliminary information at this point and five investigators have been assigned to the case.

Brar said Niagara Regional Police were responding to a possible break and enter in progress and "they had an interaction with a male" who is identified as Jason Leo Gorman, who suffered serious injuries in the process.

"We are trying to understand what the circumstances were," Brar said, and if anyone has information about this case they should contact the SIU and speak to the lead investigator.

At one point, Brar said the victim was on a roof and the investigation will try to determine what happened when police arrived on the scene.

When asked why the SIU didn't put out a media release about this incident, Brar said Sept. 19 turned out to be a busy day. They had three other serious incidents, including a shooting and someone falling off a balcony, and they don't always put out releases for every incident.

Jason Gorman, speaking from his hospital room, admitted he was on the roof of a store on McLeod Rd., and he has been charged by police with an attempted break and enter.

While on the roof, Gorman said he saw a flashlight coming toward him and he made his way back to an area where there were some pipes, which is how he climbed onto the roof. He was crouched down at the time.

"Then I didn't see the flashlight anymore. I couldn't do nothing. I felt a kick and I was gone," said Gorman, who estimates he fell about 12 feet.

"I wasn't given any kind of a chance, no one said, 'Police,' or nothing. Not a single word was said."

Gorman said the pain "is incredible" and they had to put pins in his back.

"I have casts on both my arms. I can't move my legs around and I still can't walk. I can just wiggle my toes, hopefully I will be able to walk, but it's going to be a long road to recovery."

NRP Staff Sgt. Mike Woods confirmed an incident occurred, but did not comment on the charges, adding once the SIU is called in to investigate they are not allowed to comment.
