Bristol Palin, Season 11The Bristol Palin/Levi Johnston relationship never made much sense, but when their son, Tripp, was born in 2008, they tried to make it work. For a while, anyway. They ended their engagement in March of 2009, but got back together — and got re-engaged — in July 2010. However, just a few weeks later, they ended their engagement again. Bristol said that the final straw came when Levi was spending more time trying to get a reality show than being a father: "He's just obsessed with the limelight and I got played." About a month later, Bristol drove from Alaska to L.A. for the Fall 2010 season of her own reality TV show, DWTS.

Kate Gosselin, Season 10Jon and Kate Gosselin ended their trainwreck romance in June 2009 and the divorce was finalized in December of that year. Kate got the house and primary custody, but she needed money and a sexy rebound makeover. So she went on the Spring DWTS Season 10 in March 2010. She got the money, anyway.

Melissa Rycroft, Season 8Melissa is the ultimate rebound dancer. She was dumped in a TV special after Jason Mesnick proposed to her on The Bachelor Season 13. Melissa was going to be the Season 5 Bachelorette, but Nancy O’Dell, co-host of Access Hollywood, got injured and had to bow out of DWTS Season 8. Melissa was her last-minute replacement. She had only two days to practice her first dance, but she and Tony Dovolani made it to third place that season, and being on the show helped launch the next phase of her TV career.

Heather Mills, Season 4Heather Mills and Paul McCartney separated in May of 2006, but the ugly divorce wasn’t finalized until Spring 2008. In the meantime, Heather went on the Spring 2007 DWTS Season 4. She and partner Jonathan Roberts (husband to fellow pro Anna Trebunskaya) were the fifth couple eliminated. After DWTS, Heather went back to bashing Paul and his family. Not quite a healing process!

Sara Evans, Season 3Sometimes a star has to leave the show because of a break-up. Country singer Sara Evans left DWTS Season 3 in the sixth week of competition, citing personal reasons. It was revealed the very next day that Sara had just filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years, Craig Schelske. It got really ugly. Maybe now that time has passed, and the personal stuff is out of the way, she can try to dance again?
