Two offensive powers met down in the Lone Star state, while a quarterback crisis rose on the west coast. The NFL preseason schedule for Saturday didn't disappoint with the possibilities and the drama.
Houston Texans def. New Orléans Saints: Arian Foster rampages to two TDs
It was a big night for the Houston Texans offensive line. Against an improved New Orléans Saints defense, NFL leading rusher Arian Foster saw gaping holes early and ran for two touchdowns while Matt Schaub and André Johnson took care of the air attack. Back up runner Ben Tate added another 95 yards on the ground after Foster left the game. Drew Brees struggled early against the Houston pass rush but recovered enough to lead a sustained drive that got the Saints on the board. After that it was all Texans who grinded the game out with Matt Leinart under center.
San Francisco 49ers def. Oakland Raiders: Alex Smith takes a back seat
Alex Smith inspired no confidence in fans of the San Francisco 49ers. In his second NFL preseason schedule game, Smith managed just one scoring drive and threw an interception. It would end up not mattering because the Oakland Raiders got steamrolled by a 49ers rushing attack that racked up 229 yards and two touchdowns highlighted by rookie Kendall Hunter. Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell looked good until he got knocked out of the game by the 49ers defense.
St. Louis Rams def. Tennessee Titans: Sam Bradford knocked around
Things couldn't have started better for the St. Louis Rams. On the first offensive play, Sam Bradford executed a beautiful play action pass that went for an 83-yard touchdown. The Tennessee Titans defense made sure it didn't happen again, harassing Bradford for the rest of the first half while their quarterback Matt Hasselbeck put up another solid outing. Tennessee also benefitted from good running the tandem of Jamie Harper and Stafon Johnson. Victory, however, went to St. Louis courtesy of backup quarterback A.J. Feeley who directed two fourth quarter scoring drives to cap a big comeback.
Denver Broncos def. Buffalo Bills: Kyle Orton silences doubters
Fans thought Tim Tebow had gained ground in the quarterback chase for the Denver Broncos and instead found him relegated to third string while starter Kyle Orton led two touchdown drives in the first half. He did so while missing only three of his thirteen passes. Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick couldn't get his team in the end zone for the second week in a row and threw an interception on top of it. Tyler Thigpen ended that drought when the game was already out of reach in the fourth quarter. Brady Quinn, who replaced Tebow as second string, justified the move by Broncos coach John Fox with a touchdown pass that iced the win.
Recent news update: Arizona Cardinals sign WR Larry Fitzgerald to 8-year deal
Every football expert knew the contract situation facing the Arizona Cardinals and their star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Unless they signed him to a new deal, Arizona risked losing him to free agency because of a contract clause that said the wide receiver could not be franchise tagged. The Cardinals made sure that wouldn't happen, signing Fitzgerald for another eight years on a contract worth up to $120 million.
The NFL preseason schedule for Week 2 resumes shortly. Stay tuned for more results.
