Scott during last season's AFC Championship game against Pittsburgh.
Bart Scott during the Jets-Raiders tilt two weeks ago, being knocked around. Part of the reason why Oakland rushed for 234 yards on 32 attempts and four touchdowns.
One potential reason for the Jets thus far sub-par rush defense has been the decline of Bart Scott.
Scott, who turned 31 during training camp, was a pro bowler in 2006 as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. He's made his living as one of the best containment linebackers in the league, being used primarily as a run stopper who could also get to the quarterback.
But this season, Scott has had problems getting into opposing teams backfield, as shown partially by the Jets' porous run defense. Scott has had problems getting past the linemen assigned to block him, and many of times has been knocked down.
Surely this is a sign that age is starting to catch up to the 11 year veteran and former pro bowler, however despite this Scott is still considered a leader in the Jets locker room.
But how much does he have left in the tank? Based off of what has been seen in the first five games of this season, it doesn't look like its too much. One priority for the Jets this offseason will likely be to find a linebacker that can replace Scott, not only his skills and tenacity, but also his leadership both on and off the field.
