— — Two nationally recognized experts on family violence and violence prevention will speak to the public Friday at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

The program, entitled “The Intersection of Mental Health and Interpersonal Violence — Translating Research into Advocacy,” is organized by Memorial, the Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, YWCA of Niagara and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence Program.

Featured speakers are Catherine Cerulli, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Rochester, and Suzanne Tomkins, a University of Buffalo Law School professor and co-director of the Program for Excellence in Family Law.

“Both speakers are well-respected leaders in the field of domestic violence prevention and more specifically, translating research into advocacy for victims,” said Mary Brennan-Taylor, vice president of programs at the YWCA of Niagara.

One in four women is a victim of domestic violence and 15.5 million U.S. children live in families in which partner violence occurred at least once in the past year. The organizers of the event said their hope to spread awareness of this tragic and far-reaching issue in order to put an end to its painful effects.
