Tracy Press - Volleyball Tracy plays last home match of season

Tracy High’s varsity volleyball team played its last home match of the season Tuesday in the Bill Swenson Gym. The 3-0 loss to Lincoln puts Tracy at 2-6 in the San Joaquin Athletic Association, 8-6 overall, with another match at Bear Creek on Thursday and one more at Chavez next Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Tracy lost to Lincoln with scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 in Lincoln’s favor. Lincoln is at 5-3 in the SJAA, 8-5 overall, and is likely to finish among the top 16 Division I teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section, and gain a place in playoffs. Chavez is 7-1 in the SJAA and also on a pace to make the Division I bracket, and Lodi is 6-1 as of the start of the week and is among the top 16 in the Division II bracket.

Tracy’s match showed the Bulldogs keeping pace with the Trojans at the start of the first game, with senior Jenny Barwig getting Tracy out to an early lead before Lincoln made its kill shots to catch up.

It was the last home game for Barwig, the lone senior on the team. The rest of the team is made up of two juniors, seven sophomores, and two freshmen. Barwig said her teammates never get discouraged when the team is behind, which will serve them well in the next couple of years.

“They have a lot of spirit and enthusiasm. That really pushes us through the game,” she said. “All of the girls have done their best and we’re really pushed through.”

Lincoln pulled ahead and kept the lead for the second game, but Tracy stayed alive with a series of scores with Casey Eddy at the service line, and also at the end with Barwig and Megan Alves serving. Eddy also had five digs for the night, and Barwig has four assists.

Tracy closed in during the third game on persistent hitting from Julia Jurado, who had two kills for the night, and had strong play at the net from Barwig, Samantha Gonzalez and Kimberly Paschal to keep the game close. Lincoln prevailed on some of the long rallies and pulled ahead at the end on Tracy’s missed shots.

Tracy also had three digs from Aspen Alves, four digs from Angela Mariani, and two kills from Mika Fithian.

Tracy’s sophomores lost in three, 17-25, 25-19, 9-15, and the freshmen also lost in three, 13-25, 25-17, 12-15, with Jessica Gibson leading Tracy in service points.

West High’s volleyball team moves to 3-5 for the Tri-City Athletic League season after Monday’s 3-1 win over the visiting Eagles (2-7 TCAL) from McNair High. West won it with scores of 26-24, 25-19, 19-25, 25-22.

The match was West’s benefit for breast cancer research, organized by coaches and players with the theme of “Dig Pink,” with money raised on campus and at the door, and with a raffle.

West won a close first set, and then kept the advantage through the second set before McNair threatened to make a come back. The Eagles kept the advantage through most of the third set. McNair had the lead to start the fourth set until West got points on shots from Joelise Bondo and Tatiana Aiasau, and then took the lead on a series of serves from Jill Anastasio, supported by shots from Miranda Gannon.

Junior Bea Payumo led the Wolf Pack team with 12 kills for the night, plus a block and two assists. She said her team keeps getting better, and she contributes with her ability to jump high and stay in the air for her shots.

“We’ve improved during the season. I’m proud of them.”

Senior Gannon added that all of West’s players continue to bring enthusiasm to its games.

“Our bench is always up and hyped,” she said. “Overall we’re doing pretty good. We’re working well as a team.”

Also contributing Monday were Kalani Vaughn with seven kills, 25 assists and seven digs, Jalissa Sims with six kills and five blocks, and Sierra David with an ace and 12 digs.

West’s junior varsity team won in two, 25-10, 25-13, with three aces and three kills each for Merinesa Saaga and Kate Bell, and three aces and three assists for Megan Toon. The freshman team also won in two.

Kimball’s varsity team also took fourth place in the Edison Tournament on Saturday in Stockton. In all, 46 teams competed, with West going 2-2 in its 16-team bracket with 2-0 wins over Pierce and Grace Davis, and 1-2 losses to West Campus and Rio Linda.

Kimball High’s varsity volleyball team won in four at East Union on Monday, coming back after a close loss in the first set, and finishing with close wins in the third and fourth sets, with scores of 23-25, 25-14, 25-23, 26-24.
