Police: Good Samaritan uses pepper spray to subdue fleeing hit-and-run suspect

KNOXVILLE - A Knoxville man is facing DUI and a host of other charges in connection with an alleged hit-and-run crash today after a motorist followed and ultimately subdued him with pepper spray, authorities said.

Knoxville Police Department officers responded to the reported hit-and-run in the 9000 block of Kingston Pike just after noon, according to KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

At about the same time, E-911 dispatchers received a call from a motorist who said he had witnessed the crash and was following the fleeing suspect. The motorist, Peter Bolton, 51, of Knoxville, relayed a detailed description of the suspect vehicle - a 2004 Nissan Titan pickup truck - as he followed the truck outside the city limits and onto Concord Road in West Knox County, DeBusk said.

The suspect stopped near Loop Road and a struggle ensued between him and Bolton before the witness pepper sprayed him, DeBusk said. Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies soon arrived and took the suspect into custody.

Larry Brashears, 32, now is charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render aid, violation of the implied consent law, driving without insurance and disorderly conduct, DeBusk said.

The hit-and-run victim, a 35-year-old Lexington, Ky. woman, was not injured.

More details as they develop online and in Thursday's News Sentinel.
