ILWACO - Clamshell Railroad Days 2011 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum (CPHM) in Ilwaco will be July 16 and 17. CPHM will offer lectures, bus tours, the Kids Craft Corner, and many model train exhibits. A tour of the Pullman Passenger car Nahcotta and conductor Bob's stories of riding the narrow rails of the Peninsula will be a highlight. Local historian Harry Bell will give a slide presentation on the Ilwaco Rail & Navigation Company, "Then and Now." He will be joined by Nancy Gorshe, of the Depot in Seaview, for a bus tour of the old rail lines from Ilwaco to Nahcotta on Saturday and from Ilwaco to Megler on Sunday ($5 reservation fee is required).
Kids will have plenty to see at Clamshell Railroad Days with an expanded Lego train and the addition of the Portland Garden Railroad Club's G-scale Thomas and Percy train. The Kids Craft Corner returns with box cars, coloring pages and more.
Visiting model railroad clubs from Oregon and Washington include the return of the Portland Cascade Z-scale with their fantastic diorama and imperiled kayakers. The Mt. Rainer N-scale club wowed last year's visitors with their 34-foot-long exhibit and will return with new additions this year.
Admission to Clamshell Railroad Days is $5 and includes a souvenir pin and entrance for both days. Children under 12 years old are free. New this year, the event will be free for CPHM members.
Other exhibits are on view at the Long Beach Grange and the Long Beach Depot. For more information about Clamshell Railroad Days, please contact CPHM executive director Betsy Millard or public relations coordinator Jane Sweringen at 360-642-3446.
