Huntington County acquires Hummers

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) - Traveling around Huntington County, you might see some unique police vehicles. The Huntington County Sheriff's Department has acquired three hummers without breaking its budget.

It's all a part of the Army surplus program. The military grants old equipment to police departments around the country for free as a way to recycling taxpayer dollars.

The three hummers only have about 28,000 miles combined. They'll be used for off-road rescues during floods and snowstorms. Authorities also hope to put cots in the back, helping transport victims to Parkview Hospital.

“Earlier in the spring of the year we had a lot of flooding problems,” said Mike Crago with the Huntington County Sheriff’s Reserve Department. “Most vehicles can't go in water. These can go in water up to three feet deep and with the snorkel kits on them they can go up to seven feet in water. That basically means it's just above your head.”

Crago said this wasn’t the first time the sheriff’s department tried to get the Hummers.

“I applied for 10 to start with and got those turned down. I applied for 10 more, got those turned down. Then I applied for six and got two,” Crago said.

Crago thinks the recent flooding in Huntington helped convince Army officials of the grant.
