Brave (previously titled The Bear and the Bow ) is an upcoming American computer-animated 3-D film . It is being produced by Pixar Animation Studios and will be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures . It is directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman .
The film is scheduled for release on June 22, 2012.
Brave is Pixar's first fairy tale , and is somewhat darker and more mature in tone than their previous films. Brenda Chapman considers it as a fairy tale in the tradition of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm .Chapman conceived the project and was announced as the director of the film, making her Pixar's first female director,but on October 2010 she was replaced by Mark Andrews. Andrews has now been confirmed as the director of the film and Chapman as the co-director, although she is reportedly no longer working on the film.
The film was initially set for release on June 15, 2012 but was later changed to June 22, 2012.
Merida is the first female protagonist in a Pixar film .Merida was originally to be voiced by Reese Witherspoon , but she declined due to scheduling issues. Instead, the character will be played by the Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald .
