I didn't socialize with many of the women this season, but unfortunately I got into a situation with Simon that I couldn't get out of which left me leaving the dinner party crying. This article is timeless and timely. The former accurately portrays the yearning for the right tool to do the job. Sleepless nights and turning and tossing. The latter now prompts me to revisit a project put aside for the last 4 years. I encountered Perl at about the time that the article was written to process Excel files. I hated and do hate manual data entry and carve up scripts and makefiles to automate the task. Then the idea of a GUI came up and attempted to develop a GUI for the end users using the Win32 OLE Perl Module. In preparation for the new Endangered Neighbors exhibit at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, I volunteered to sort through the stomach contents collected from Black-footed albatrosses. Through the faint smell of fish and squid, I was shocked at the things I found. Mistaken for food by these great birds, plastic debris remains in the stomachs of the animals, reducing space available for food to be carried to their chicks, and causing the birds to suffocate and die of starvation. This is one of the main reasons that the population of black-footed albatross is estimated at 120,000 and declining.

The California Department of Public Health is investigating a Pasadena hospital associated with the doctor who hosts VH1's reality show "Celebrity Rehab" after three patients reportedly died and one was allegedly sexually assaulted on the premises during the past five months.
The three deceased patients -- one of whom was found dead just hours after checking into the facility -- were all patients at the Aurora Las Encinas Hospital, according to ABC News' Los Angeles affiliate KABC. The facility's chemical dependency program is co-directed by Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of radio's "Love Line" and "Celebrity Rehab."

I honestly have never understood the hype surrounding NYC streetwear label, Married to The Mob when it’s really nothing more than a tawdry compilation of trumped up basics bearing novelty ghetto proverbs and tacky, yet somehow dull graphics and details. Now they’ve released their Spring 09 lookbook featuring Kid Sister and I’m unimpressed to say the least. I mean, maybe the hackneyed 80’s, B-girl look isn’t meant for grown women, but I highly doubt anyone under the age of 17 would be allowed to leave the house in a vinyl raglan jacket claiming membership to the “Most Official Bitches Crew”. The hoodies, the tees, the windbreakers, and the cotton candy-colored stonewashed jeans are juvenile at best and are devoid of any true originality or style. The 28-yr.old whose outfit screams “I ain’t no holla back girl!”—not a good look.

Fireworks push Wichita ozone levels over EPA limit
WICHTA, Kansas (AP) -- Wichita city officials say Fourth of July fireworks helped push Wichita's ozone levels past federal standards on Independence Day.
The Environmental Protection Agency requires an average of less than .075 parts per million of ozone particles during an 8-hour period.
If the city has four days with 8-hour averages above that limit, it will have to produce a plan to reduce ozone.

WASHINGTON - By the time fireworks lit up the sky on the Fourth of July, the D.C. fire department had already been busy with another holiday tradition: confiscating illegal fireworks.
"We have retrieved hundreds of thousands of pieces of fireworks," says Pete Piringer, fire department spokesman. "A couple of days before the Fourth of July, a couple of days after."

A 14-year-old boy appeared in court Friday, accused of throwing a firecracker at a Peoria police officer during a Monday night fracas near Taft Homes.
The boy appeared in the juvenile division of Peoria County Circuit Court charged with mob action, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property. The teen also faces a retail theft count from an incident in March. Judge Chris Fredericksen ordered the boy held at the county’s juvenile detention center pending a July 14 court hearing when the boy is expected to answer the allegations.

Zachariah Sundby, 23, of Williston and Ryan Fazekas , 25, of Wolcott went into the river Thursday and were soon trapped by the rushing waters of the gorge.

Frank McCourt was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Irish immigrant parents. Unable to find work in the depths of the Depression, the McCourts returned to Ireland, where they sunk deeper into the poverty McCourt describes so movingly in his memoir, Angela's Ashes.
McCourt's father, an alcoholic, was often without work. He drank up what little money he earned and eventually abandoned the family altogether. Three of the seven children died of diseases aggravated by malnutrition and the squalor of their surroundings. Frank McCourt himself nearly died of typhoid fever when he was ten. McCourt's memoir describes an entire block of houses sharing a single outhouse, ground floor dwellings flooded by constant rain, a home infested with rats and vermin. Despite the horrors of McCourt's childhood, he told his story with humor, brilliant description, and deep compassion for his family, even for the shiftless father who instilled in him a love of language and storytelling.

But when police came asking questions in December 1978, Gacy started confessing. And so the cops looked in the house's 40-ft. crawl space, beneath the garage and under the house. They found the bodies and remains of 28 young men and boys; Gacy said there were four others that he had thrown into the river. By the end of the year, police had practically torn the house down in their search. There was no question that Gacy would be found guilty; and a jury took barely an hour to come to that decision. He was sentenced to death, under new guidelines that would make sure the penalty was not "cruel and unusual" and therefore within constitutional bounds. But Gacy's execution by lethal injection in 1994 would reopen that question; instead of a five-minute procedure, the process took 18 and Gacy was clearly struggling as he perished. The critics asked: Was this cruel and unusual? His victims' families were unanimous: so was Gacy.
