Elvis, dancers and martial arts highlight talent competition

REDLANDS - Citrus Valley High School junior Joe Banuelos easily sang, strung and strutted his way to the top with an impersonation of Elvis Presley singing "Rip It Up" Saturday evening to win the Redlands Educational Partnership Foundation's second annual RUSD's Got Talent at Redlands High School.

Judges said Banuelos "had the whole package of musicality, personality and an overall outstanding performance."

Banuelos was one of 21 acts that participated in the REP fundraiser, and won $500 for first place.

REP contributes just under $100,000 annually back to schools and programs within the Redlands Unified School District, and runs AAA Academy, a tuition-based academic and enrichment program.

junior of Redlands High School, came in second place for his piano performance of Chopin's "Berceuse in D Flat Major," winning $300; and a taekwondo team chopped and kicked its way to third place - the team represented Judson and Brown and McKinley elementary schools, and Clement Middle School, and comprised John Aquino, Jessica Lanum, Amber Miller, Nolan Nguyen, Noelle Nguyen, Ian Tagpis, Jeremy Tagpis, Danny Vuong and Vina Vuong. The team shared a $200 third-place award.

The judges also awarded a couple of superlatives: Bailey Kasin of Moore Middle School won Most Original for the second year for his yo-yo demonstration, which was complemented by a PowerPoint display; and Emma Kern, a student at Beattie Middle School, was awarded

Best Personality for her rendition of Barbra Streisand's "Don't Rain On My Parade."

Other acts to take the stage included Mariposa School pupil Emily Long dancing to "The Life of the Party" by Idina Menzel; Cope student Tiffany Rekem singing Sarah Brightman's "Winter Light"; Cope student Tyler Rain Mardis singing "Speechless" by Lady Gaga; Smiley Elementary School pupil Destiny Ayala singing "Rolling In the Deep" by Adele; Claire Peister of Redlands East Valley High School dancing to "Wild Horses" by Natasha Bedingfield; Yuri Muneir of Citrus Valley singing Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Music of the Night"; Remae Mackamul, a pupil at Highland Grove Elementary, with a comedy act; four students from the Redlands YMCA with Cirque Manical, (Heather Beymer, Shasten Johnson, and Andrew and Charley Keidel); Jaclyn Litchfield of Mariposa dancing to Imogen Heap's "Hide & Seek"; Ryan Simus of Citrus Valley peformed Seether's "Broken" on guitar; Moore Middle School students Ava Lalezarzadeh and Erielle Johnson singing "Rolling in the Deep" from Adele; Sarrisa Powel of Cope Middle School dancing to Marie Digby's "Invisible"; and the cheerleading stunt team from Redlands High School, Delaney Aragon, Cylenn Ecret, Erika Elton, Kneka Evans, Hannah Ganther, Sara Grinnan, Sabrina Ponte, Amelia Sequeira, Taylor Sturm and Chandler VanMill.

"It is thrilling to see this event, in just its second year, grow and bring in roughly $10,000 that we will commit to our programs," REP President Cindy Calderon said.

The event was organized by talent show committee chairwoman Sherri Olson.
