Bangkok Post : Look, it's Madonna

Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project has been going strong for sometime now. As the name suggests, global party people have been getting glimpses of how their counterparts get down via this project, which creates platform for deejays, artists and musicians to travel around the world, bring along their local party spirits with them.

The finalists.

November 12 was marked as an all-out party night for participating countries, Thailand included. We were supposed to get a taste of the infamous Irish nightlife through selected performers, but as everything else went, the great flood put a stop to such plans. Then again all eyes were on New York city for Madonna had been roped in as the main draw. With the queen of pop's name tightly attached to the hoopla, New York was abuzz with anticipation.

"Madonna has championed unique, one-of-a-kind experiences in music and dance throughout her career, and because of this she was the perfect partner for this year's programme," said Simon Burch, global brand director for Smirnoff Co.

Roseland Ballroom could hold only around 3,000-strong punters, and some of those who queued even earlier than 9pm were denied entry, left with broken hearts as they missed out an opportunity to see Madge up close and personal. Not only Madonna was set to grace the occasion, she was also to select a winner of a dance-off to be part of her dancing team.

The Nightlife Exchange Project dance competition attracted the attention of aspiring dancers around the globe, but only 11 finalists made the cut. They were flown into New York, worked under Madonna's main choreographers before dancing their little hearts out in front of the madame herself.

Before Madonna's arrival, the atmosphere somehow lost its momentum as the lucky ones stood around in a big hall under bright lights aimlessly, but when the show kicked off, there were performances and competing dancers to gawk at, everything fell into motions.

Before the dance competition took place, there were "dance of the world" showcases. Traditional dances from countries such as Thailand and Brazil were given new twists. For the Thai part, Thai dancers _ male and female _ displayed our signature hand movements, and graceful legworks with Western dance music from MGMT to RCA red beat techno. If you've seen Thai dances before, this would not blow you out of the water.

Then the heat rose as Madonna ascended up the stage. Looking youthful and enthusiastic, she was perfect for the job. As the 11 finalists performed continuously, Madonna paid rapt attention to each and every one of them, and later picked out the final four before settling down with Lil Buck from Memphis. Lil Buck has now officially joined Madonna's dance crew, and will accompany her on tour.

Definitely, a dancer's dream as Madonna's troupe is one of the most revered on the planet.

Then after the congratulatory part was over, Madonna moved on to the deejay deck where Martin Solvieg manned the station.

Madonna handpicked him to bring the night up to speed. She jumped, and waved her hands around a little while before deciding that she should leave the premise for possibly something more glamorous and private, and surely we weren't invited.

Without Madonna, the party ended abruptly. As they say in showbiz, Madonna has left the building.
