It stayed here, although it had several other names, until 1985, and evolved into what is now the Viking Classic at Annandale Golf Club in Madison.

In the grand scheme of things, it was a small professional tournament. For a small city like Hattiesburg, it was the big time.

“It was huge,” said Morgan, who put 43 of his 80 years into the tournament.

“The first or second year of the tournament, they let school out on Wednesday for the pro-am. That would take an act of Congress. That’s how big it was.”

David Allen became the head golf pro at the Hattiesburg Country Club last October, and heard the stories of the Magnolia Classic. But when he looked around the club, there was no evidence of the event.
