Amazon will offer Netflix app for Kindle | StAugustine.com

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet will offer a Netflix application among thousands of apps that will be available when the tablet debuts later this month, Amazon announced Wednesday.

Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc. have battled for streaming-video content for the past several months, with Amazon attempting to beef up its Amazon Prime streaming service. Customers who purchase the Kindle Fire are expected to receive a month of free Amazon Prime service, but they will also have access to Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix for streaming service.

“We’re excited to team up with Amazon to give what we think will be a huge community of Kindle Fire owners the opportunity experience all that Netflix has to offer,” Netflix Vice President of Business Development Bill Holmes said in the news release.

Other Kindle Fire apps that will be available from the Amazon Appstore for the Nov. 15 launch include Facebook, streaming-music service Pandora and Twitter. Popular Zynga game “Words with Friends” will be a featured game on the device, which will also have access to “Angry Birds” and a host of games from Electronic Arts, Zynga, Rovio, PopCap and Gameloft.

App availability will be crucial for Amazon’s new tablet, as it will not have access to the Android App Market despite being an Android-based device.

Since the announcement of the new full-color tablet, Amazon has been hit with new competition: Barnes & Noble announced Monday that its full-color e-reader-turned-tablet, the Nook Tablet, will be available to consumers a few days after the Kindle Fire is released. The company highlighted the Nook Tablet’s Netflix and Hulu Plus apps at Monday’s announcement.
