A MAN who attacked a club doorman has narrowly avoided being sent to prison.
Dean Harris was given a suspended sentence after he was told “only a custodial sentence is appropriate” for his attack on Adam Cale.
Harris, aged 24, had admitted assaulting Mr Cale, a doorman at the Metro Bar in St Nicholas Street, Worcester, when he appeared before city magistrates previously.
As reported in yourWorcester News, Harris and Mr Cale had words some time before their fight, which ended up with Harris being banned from the bar.
But on Saturday, April 16, Harris went to the bar with friends and told Mr Cale he would “behave himself”. Mr Cale then let him in to “avoid argument”. Harris, of Lime Avenue, Brickfields, Worcester, was later seen smoking inside the club and went outside to put it out.
When he came back he threw what Mr Cale called a “boisterous” play punch at his head and he told Harris not to come back to the bar .
At the previous court hearing, Matt Dodson, prosecuting, said: “Mr Harris then looked away but turned back, throwing a right hook, which hit Mr Cale in the head.”
A rain of blows then followed, all directed at the doorman. Mr Cale then punched back in self-defence.
“They were split up but Mr Harris then charged Mr Cale from 10ft and they both went to the ground, where they scuffled,” said Mr Dodson.
Susie Duncan, defending, asked magistrates to take into account Harris’s remorse.
She said: “This was committed in drink. He’s a hard-working young man which is evident from the references you have got. He has set up his own business. He would very much wish to apologise to the victim.”
Harris was sentenced to four weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months, and a two-month curfew at an address in Bath Road between 9pm and 6am Monday to Thursday and 7pm to 6am Friday-Sunday.
He must also complete 80 hours of unpaid work and was excluded from Metro Bar for two years.
He must pay £250 compensation and £85 costs.
