In case you missed it, and I don’t know how any red-blooded American could have, the week of Aug. 10-16 was “Elvis Week,” an annual tribute to the Mississippi-born King of Rock n’ Roll who supposedly left this earthly building 34 years ago. Events of the week included concerts, dances, tours, an official Elvis Bingo game, impersonator performances, several Elvis sightings, a candlelight vigil at Graceland and numerous interviews with people who recalled where they were and what they were doing when they heard that Elvis Presley died.
Like many of them, I can recall with great clarity where I was and what I was doing, much the same as with other American historical events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Neil Armstrong’s first step on the moon and the 9-11 tragedy. Of course, we must put an asterisk beside our Elvis death recollections because he has been spotted on numerous occasions in numerous places around the world since that day more than three decades ago and surely a million or so folks who swear they saw him couldn’t be wrong, could they? Sometimes I wonder if more people haven’t seen Elvis since he died than did when he was living.
