The Speaker of the House of Assembly Lovemore Moyo has praised lawmakers from his political party for performing well during the just-ended Third Session of the Seventh Parliament.
Moyo said this at the weekend MDC-T 12-year anniversarycelebrations at Gwanzura Stadium in Harare.
“I would like to applaud the MDC-T MPs for the tremendous work they have done in the Legislature,” said Moyo.
“The Public Order and Security Act amendments were passed in the House of Assembly and transmitted to Senate for consideration during the just-ended session of Parliament,” he said.
Moyo applauded Parliamentary Portfolio Committees and said MPs from his party did a sterling job in their supervisory role.
“The committees are also doing very well in their oversight role although recently during the Human Rights Commission public hearings, Zanu PF thugs disrupted some of the public consultation meetings.
“Despite these barbaric incidents, Parliament will not be intimidated and will continue to consult the public in its work and represent the interests of the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.
The public hearings on the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission Bill were disrupted in Chinhoyi, Mutare, Masvingo and then at the Parliament Building by Zanu PF supporters.
The supporters beat up MDC-T legislator for Hwange Central Brian Tshuma before pouncing on journalists Nqaba Matshazi of The Standard newspaper, Levi Mukarati of The Financial Gazette and NewsDay photojournalist Aaron Ufumeli.
After the violence, Moyo called for thorough investigations and for the arrest of the perpetrators.
But Zanu PF secretary for Administration Didymus Mutasa later told NewsDay in an interview that his party was going to defend their supporters if they were brought to book for the Parliament violence, including paying their legal fees.
On the constitution-making process which is being led by a parliamentary body, Copac, Moyo said one of the founding objectives of the MDC-T, which is to have a people-driven constitution had been almost attained.
“Currently the Constitution Parliamentary Select Committee is finalising its report and will soon be entering its next stage, which is the drafting stage,” Moyo said.

He said the people of Zimbabwe will have another opportunity to air their views on the constitution at the Second All- Stakeholders’ Conference as well as during the referendum.
For the first time I have seen progressive comments from people of Zimbabwe on this site. MDC-MPs in the August house were no difference from subpoenaing the devil as witness. The truth has to be said and those who have been at the zim parly website would agree with me, the whole bunch and I mean it the whole lacks vision, are ideologically bankruptcy and got no clue on what their jobs are. Mr. Speaker Sir, what have seen as people of Zimbabwe that you regard as “tremendous works”? We would have expected more and not limited to the following
1. Promulgation of a law that compels qualified and experienced doctors top commit a day from their surgery to the public Hospitals (National Service)
2. Mr Speaker Sir, I could not stomach the idea of seeing a completely wrong and not well researched question on one of the exam papers from what used to be Academic institute in our country. Surely would it not have been splendid if you had passed a law that again compels so many professors in our industry committing even 3 hours of their time in the institution of Higher learning.
3. Mr Speaker Sir, Would it not been a “tremendous work” if a legislation would have been passed for relatives of victims of accident be it on the road or at work to easily sue the companies or simply perpetrators of heinous acts that have killed more our people than AIDS.
4. Mr Speaker sir the list is endless, including blocking ministers who got 3 top of the range vehicles in 2009 acquiring more top fuel guzzlers like the SUV V8 land cruiser at the expense of the poor, bogus schools and clinics mushrooming in every corner of Zimbabwe, better funding of our colleges and universities than sending students to monash to study sociology..mazwi enyu andiremera/kunzima lokhu Mr speaker
