Newsday Truck Crashes into Bellmore Post Office

A Newsday delivery truck struck the Bellmore Post Office early Tuesday morning, after the driver fell out of the truck as he attempted to snatch loose papers falling from the truck, Nassau County police said.

The 54-year-old driver was heading east on Merrick Road around 1:10 a.m. when he hit a bump causing newspapers to fall out of the passenger side of the truck, police said. The driver reached out to grab the papers but fell out of the vehicle, police said. The driverless truck jumped a curb and slammed into the post office. Nobody was inside the building at the time of the crash.

The driver was transferred to Nassau University Medical Center, a spokesperson with the hospital said. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The post office will remain closed on Tuesday. A mobile post office was set up outside the parking lot.

A building inspector and Nassau County Fire Marshalls office were at the scene.

The Bellmore Fire Department also responded to the scene.
