Falls doctor accused of illegally dispensing meds pleads not guilty - Courts - The Buffalo News

Pravin V. Mehta, the former Niagara Falls doctor accused of illegally dispensing pain medication, was arraigned in federal court today.

A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Mehta said very little during his appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder and later declined comment when questioned by a Buffalo News reporter.

"He's a compassionate, hard-working doctor who practiced in Niagara Falls for over 30 years," defense lawyer Joel L. Daniels said of his client.

Mehta, 72, is accused of authorizing dangerous painkillers to patients without a proper medical exam.

He also is alleged to have signed blank prescription forms and directed his office staff to fill in information about the drug and dosage.

Mehta was arrested along with 13 others as part of a January raid of his medical offices in Niagara Falls. To date, six of those defendants have been convicted.

Mehta, an internationally trained internist and endocrinologist, surrendered his medical license in February.
