In the gaming world of a high school teenager, first there was Fruit Ninja then there was Farmville and Fishville, but now there’s Words with Friends. All of these games have been taking over kids free time for a few years now.
Words with Friends is a spin off of the popular board game Scrabble, with a little twist. Almost everyone has taken notice to the new extremely addictive game, or have at least heard of it.
“Words with Friends is probably so popular because it’s a good time passer, and when you beat someone it makes you feel smart,” explained senior Parker McArdle.

The game can be played on Facebook, or on any smart phone or iPod with download-able apps. You can even get a free version of WWF. The cool thing about the new game is you can link your game to Facebook and play with your friends. There is even a chat bar attached to each game so you can chat with your opponent. The game sends notifications to Facebook or your phone to let you know when it’s your turn to play.
“I like playing words with friends because it helps to pass the time when I’m really bored. When I’m on Facebook and nothing exciting is going on, it’s something to do. I also like to use it to procrastinate from doing my homework,” said McArdle.
Some kids who play this game take it seriously, and have to win. Some go so far as to use cheat apps, where they can get words to play for a lot more points than they would have come up with on their own.
You have to strategically place letters on the Dw Tw Tl or Dl squares to get extra points. Each letter has a point amount you earn for using the letter, and if you put that letter on a Tl or Dl you get triple or double the points. Tw and Dw get you triple or double the points for the entire word. It can be quite tricky. “I don’t like playing Words with Friends because you have to know how to spell words, and I don’t. I always lose and that’s not fun,” said senior Matt Brady.
Brady isn’t the only person who isn’t a fan of Words with Friends; many people dislike the game because they have better things to do, or they get tired of waiting for their opponent to make a move. Sometimes it can take days.
Regardless of if you're a Words with Friends addict, or if you're not really into it at all, everyone had heard of the game. I advise everyone to at least give it a try! You may love it!
