Words with Friends, created by Zynga , is an incredibly popular game accessible on mobile phones, Facebook, iPads, and other tablets. Personally, I usually have at least 8-10 Words with Friends’ games going at the same time on any given day. And it’s clear I’m not alone.

About 2.5 million people use the Words with Friends’ app on a regular basis, making this an incredibly successful venture for Zynga that has paid off many times over. But just how did they go about creating such a popular app? And better yet, how can you do it too?
Here are 5 tips for getting your mobile app or online game noticed:
Differentiate yourself . If you haven’t noticed, Words with Friends is extremely similar to another popular game (hello, Scrabble!) but Zynga set their game apart with a few key changes. Not only did they make this Scrabble-esque game accessible by mobile device, they allowed users to play against friends and chat during games. They took an unoriginal idea and made it original. Genius.
Pay for a quality user interface . Creating any kind of mobile app or game is very expensive and you should know that going in. For this reason, cutting corners anywhere you can may be tempting. But when it comes to the user interface of your app, skimping is ill-advised. If your app is hard to navigate, unattractive, or simply not as good as the competition, whose do you think people will end up using?
Keep evolving . The best way to keep users interested in your mobile app is through updates. Continually improving your app by releasing updates that fix any bugs and adding new features will keep your users satisfied.
Pick your platform wisely . The iPhone and Android are the most obvious choices for your app’s platform, but what about Blackberry, Palm Pre, or Windows Mobile? Before making your decision, figure out who your target audience is and what type of phone they’d be most likely to use.
Take your time . So you have a great idea and you’re afraid someone’s going to come out with the same app before you’re able to. It’s a legitimate concern, but rushing your app for the sake of heading off the competition isn’t going to accomplish anything. Take your time to develop a dynamic, user-friendly mobile app or game and you’ll have a much greater chance for achieving the success you want.
Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to launching a successful mobile app.
