Review: Words with Friends for iPhone and iPad

My wife is into the 3rd trimester of her pregnancy and she is trying to stay home to rest as it gets a bit trying for her to be out and about.  So when I am out and about town to do what I do we communicate via quite frequently.  Recently, we have been playing “Words With Friends” as a form of interaction while I am Home and Away, and its proven to be a boatload of good wholesome fun.

Words with Friends is a scrabble-like game that lets you play with friends, family or random opponents.  After downloading the App you create a user ID to identify yourself.

You get 7 letters to place on the board.  Each word must be joined to any other word on the board (except the starting word)

Each letter has a Point and every valid letter placed scored you the amount of points

There are DL (double letter), DW (double word), TL (triple letter) and TW (triple word) tiles on the board and placing any letter there scores extra points (as the tiles say)

If you play 5 letters you get 5 letters back from a common pile.  The game ends when you:

Have drawn all the letters from the pile Used all your letters up (when you do that you get 30 extra points + the points of your opponents unused letters) Any played elects to take a pass 3 times

You can play with friends by searching by their user IDs or thru your contact list (where they will be invited to download the game and register their user ID).  There is no time limit and you can have multiple games going at once.  I have 5 with a few of my friends.  Once they make a move you will receive a notification.

A really nice feature is the chat function – You simply tap the “chat” button in the upper corner of the screen and type as you would with any mobile chat client.  In case you are wondering there is a time limit for players that don’t bother to update their games after 7 days.

You can literally play the game at your own pace and also pick up some new words along the way.  For example QAT is a tropical evergreen plant whose leaves are used as a stimulant. Q also scores 10 points so its really good to know

Words with Friends is free and you get prompted to an Ad screen after each turn.  There is an Ad free version for $2.99.  It is available for the iPhone and iPad.
