Houston Texans offer same old same old; If you are surprised, blame yourself
The Houston Texans need a new head coach. They need a new front office. This is not news. It has been obvious to anyone with an above room temperature IQ for several years. But for some reason, hard core Texan Fan just doesn’t get it.
The Texans always have another excuse for mediocrity at the ready. Every off season they point to the one area that needs fixing that should put them over the top, whilst hole after leaky hole spring up in its place. The local press and fan bloggers oblige this PR organization posing as an NFL team by bending over backwards to accept the Texans’ every excuse. And they even come up with some creative excuses of their own.
But here are the facts:
Gary Kubiak’s record after 5 seasons and six games is 39-45. That is the beginning and the end of it. He has had more than enough time to craft a team in his image. And he has. What do the fans get in return? Consistent mediocrity.
The saddest part is the Pollyannaism that has allowed Gary Kubiak to keep his job despite showing very little improvement in the won/loss column over the last five seasons will also inevitably allow Wade Phillips to be his successor.
Of course, hard core Texan Fan will deny this is already in the motions, and has been for quite some times. When it happens, it will be greeted by Texan Fan with great optimism. Suckers.
Texan Fan could not contain his/her excitement when the Texans brought Phillips on as a defensive coordinator. In their warped mind, the cure for a disappointing head coach was a great defensive coordinator.
There are two main problems with this type of thinking:
The first problem is that it is just flat out stupid. The way you deal with a bad coach is by replacing him with one that might be better. Especially when said head coach has not sniffed the playoffs in his five years as a head coach.
The second problem is that Wade Phillips has never really been a great defensive coordinator in the NFL. He has been better than average. He has a lot of experience. But insofar as the Texans are concerned, he is a band aid on Ebola. And the worst part is, it has been obvious from the beginning that Wade and his pops Bum have been maneuvering through the Good Ol’ Boys network to make sure Wade is the next guy to land a head coaching contract with the Houston Texans.
Although Wade is not the world beater defensive coordinator Texan Fan likes to pretend he is, he was a much better head coach than Gary Kubiak has ever been, with a career record of 82-59 and five playoff appearances. That is not to say he is a good head coach. He’s not. Being a better coach than Gary Kubiak is like being taller than Webster. It’s not much to put on a resume’.
But that is how it will play out. And hard core Texan Fan will deny it kicking and screaming the whole time. But it is written in stone, guys. Instead of attacking the messenger, I think it is time for hard core Texan Fan to turn their animus against the organization, if only to protest the 3-5 year debacle Phillips will organize once Kubiak is axed.
About two years ago I wrote that if the Houston Texans did not axe Gary Kubiak and carefully handpick his successor, they would be flirting with permanently being in the Cincinnati Bengals/Detroit Lions strata of NFL franchises. I was attacked with some crazy online smack, including a blog post dedicated to what a d-bag I was, complete with wishes for anal rape against my mother.
And you know what? My attackers were right about one thing. At this point, the Houston Texans organization is light years behind the Bengals and Lions.
