Fashion Watch Out of this world

JOEY SAMSON brought the future and the cosmos to Fashion Watch Quartet held at Shangri-La Makati last Thursday.

“[It’s] one of the best collections,” commented fashion designer Inno Sotto as he stepped in to congratulate Mr. Samson for a successful show during BusinessWorld ’s interview.

The collection featured a myriad of cuts and textures, complemented by consistent use of navy with orange and gray as accent colors.

Diagonal and horizontal stripes and an outer space print were also seen on a number of pieces.

“Long story short, I was inspired by how pure kids think,” said Mr. Samson. He recounted a “chitchat” he had with several children on the story of “the man on the moon” and the real man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. “I wanted to know their opinion and interpretation of it.”

According to the designer, his new collection diverts into a different direction in terms of color and texture without abandoning his roots in men’s wear. Mr. Samson wanted to incorporate more girly pieces, “[It’s] a conscious effort to do tailoring in a refined manner but in a different technique.”

Seen on the models were jumpsuits, pencil skirts, formfitting dresses, and bare back pieces, in silhouettes that ranged from flowy to more structured outfits in cotton and linen. The bare backs, Mr. Samson pointed out, were meant to feminize the look of the pieces.

A crowd pleaser was the white “pixelized” dress which featured square-cut holes. “It represents the lightness of being in outer space,” explained Mr. Samson.

All models wore their hair in sleek buns ornamented by a fleck of gold which looked melded with the hair. “I wanted to come up with styling that was not so space-agey but at the same time modern.”

Also showing her designs at the fashion show was Len Nepomuceno who wanted to start a different trend for the spring/summer -- short hemlines, neutral colors, and black stockings -- bringing back the “Roaring ’20s.”

“I was inspired by the Coco Chanel little black dress. It’s my interpretation of the 1920s,” said Ms. Nepomuceno. “Retro vintage, I call it.”

Neutral colors -- black, gray, light shades of brown and white -- were chosen “because they’re more me,” shared the designer. “I like black, I like gray.”

Aside from super short dresses, there was also a play on sheer, shiny and glittery fabrics. For this collection, chiffon, crochet and macramé were used, the pieces were sexy but not risqué -- “It’s for the young crowd,” noted Ms. Nepomuceno. -- Camille Erika R. Sarte

( The next Fashion Watch Quartet show will be on Oct. 20, 4 p.m., at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel’s Lobby Lounge. It will feature the designs of Ferdi Abuel and Norman Noriega. )
