FAIRFIELD — A little taste of Elvis Presley is coming to Butler County in the form of Ryan Pelton, an impersonator but also an original singer/songwriter.

The name might sound familiar to some, as Pelton performed a few times at the Butler County Fair and used to sing annually at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati with the Elvis Birthday Tribute Tour.

Pelton will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Fairfield Banquet and Convention Center, said Lynn Connolly, general manager of the convention center.

Connolly said she first saw Pelton perform about 12 years ago at the Newport Syndicate.

“He’s got the moves, look and charisma,” Connolly said. “A good performer is when he walks out on stage and your eyes don’t leave him.”

Pelton, residing in Nashville, Tenn., said what started as a dare from his mother to enter an Elvis contest has blossomed into a career and the opportunity to start his own band, The Difference, three years ago.

“I did it as a joke,” Pelton said. “I rented a VHS documentary about Elvis, got a white sports coat at Salvation Army and an old guitar without strings, learned all the music and over two days I won the contest.”

Pelton was performing in Philadelphia a week later.

“There’s a certain energy that comes with being on stage and entertaining an audience,” Pelton said.

Connolly said Friday’s show will include about five different eras of Elvis, including jumpsuits, black leather and G.I. Blues.

Pelton said since the age of 12 he’s been told him he looks like a young Elvis. Even when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve out of high school and had his head shaved, Pelton said his nickname was Elvis.

“He has a lot of fans in the Tri-State that haven’t seen him in years,” Connolly said.

Events on Oct. 29 include a luncheon at the event center for his fan club and a Halloween costume party in the evening for all ages. Prizes given out include seven big-screen televisions.

Pelton’s band will perform original songs Saturday.

“He’s always stayed true to the person he was and never let it go to his head,” Connolly said. “He’s genuine and humble and that’s how Elvis was.”
