As students returned to school on Tuesday, Niagara police were out in full force taking aim at aggressive and distracted drivers.
The annual Niagara Regional Police All Hands on Deck traffic safety and awareness campaign coincides with the first day of school.
Over 100 extra officers from the chief of police to uniform constables were reassigned from their regular duties to participate in enforcement teams that were stationed outside numerous school zones throughout the region.
"We want to reinforce the message to our officers and to the public that traffic safety is paramount," said deputy police chief Joe Matthews at a police checkpoint set up on Portage Rd. near Ecole St. Antoine.
"We also want to send a very strong message to the public that we need to be vigilant all year long."
The initiative is designed to be a highly visible reminder to residents that children are back to school and that drivers should slow down, watch for pedestrians and pay attention to crossing guards.
Police remind motorists that vehicles must stop in both directions when a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing.
Failure to do so could result in a fine of almost $500.
In addition to issuing tickets for speeding and other offences under the Highway Traffic Act, police also enforced laws relating to the use of distraction devices including cell phones.
The NRP will continue to conduct traffic safety initiatives in school zones throughout the school year.
