NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) - Three Niagara County emergency dispatchers are traveling to Broome County to help the flood-ravaged city of Binghamton and the surrounding area.
Broome County put out a statewide plea for dispatchers last Friday to help their staff during the emergency. Senior Dispatcher Darlene Gurnett and Dispatchers Roger Yurek and Michael Myers are answering the call. They left Sunday evening for Binghamton and will work 12 hour shifts on Monday and Tuesday, and unless they are needed for a longer period of time, they will then return home.
Niagara and Broome Counties share similar communications and computer systems, and Dispatcher Yurek assisted Broome County with a weather emergency in 2006. Sheriff James Voutour commends his dispatchers, all of whom volunteered for the assignment that will take them from their homes and families for several days.
