HOUSTON — Through the offseason and preseason, there was constant speculation among Houston fans and media about Mario Williams’ transition from defensive end to outside linebacker in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defense.
Because of Williams’ size (6-6, 285), many thought he wouldn’t be as effective without his hand on the ground because he couldn’t get leverage and didn’t know how to use his hands to shed blockers who came in low. In about six quarters of play in preseason, Williams had no sacks, leading to more concern.

Fans and media demanded that Phillips return Williams, who led the team in sacks in each of his first five seasons, to end even though veteran Antonio Smith and rookie J.J. Watt were doing a terrific job there.
Phillips pleaded patience and suggested that once Williams played a full game, he’d have more opportunities for big plays and that people would see how playing the weak side would be advantageous to his career.
As the Texans prepare for Game 2 at Miami, no one is now questioning the move. Williams had two sacks against Indianapolis and also caused an intentional grounding call. He was disruptive in two- and three-point stances.
One game into the season, at least, it looks like fans and media should have trusted Phillips more.
Notes: Running back Arian Foster (hamstring) went through another practice Thursday and will start at Miami. Even though receiver Kevin Walter (bruised shoulder) and running back Derrick Ward (sprained ankle) haven’t practiced, coach Gary Kubiak didn’t rule them out of the Miami gam, either. More than likely, though, they’ll be inactive. Jacoby Jones would likely replace Walter, and Foster would replace Ward, who started against the Colts.
