Weather from June until September is near-perfect for outdoor activities, but expect a few tropically hot days with temperature and humidity both hitting 100 (38 C). By mid-July and continuing through late September, Lake Michigan is perfect for swimming.
Local weather reporters often talk of "lake effect" to indicate conditions near Lake Michigan where the water temperature and wind make summer extremes more moderate and winter conditions may be more intense.
